Valve Linux graphics developer Timur Kristóf has submitted patches enabling the Radeon HD 7870 XT to finally work under Linux, nearly 14 years after the GPU launched. The card never worked with open-source drivers because it uses a 'harvested' chip with partially disabled TCC cache configurations that AMDGPU didn't handle correctly. The fix addresses TCC cache partial disable/fuse-off scenarios and optimizes use of remaining TCCs, resolving bug reports dating back to 2013. This continues Kristóf's broader effort to improve GCN 1.0/1.1 GPU support under the modern AMDGPU driver, replacing the legacy Radeon kernel driver and enabling benefits like RADV Vulkan support.
