Fresh benchmarks compare the fully open-source NVIDIA Linux driver stack (Nouveau kernel driver + Mesa NVK Vulkan + Zink) across three configurations: Ubuntu 25.10's stack (Linux 6.17 + Mesa 25.2), the latest upstream (Linux 7.0 + Mesa 26.1-dev), and the official NVIDIA 590.48.01 proprietary driver. Testing was performed on a System76 Thelio Mira with an RTX 5080 16GB, covering Vulkan via NVK, OpenGL via Zink, and OpenCL via Mesa's Rusticl driver. The goal is to show how much the open-source stack has progressed over the past six months and how it compares to the official NVIDIA driver.
