NVIDIA has unveiled its GeForce NOW game streaming service as a native Linux application, available via Flatpak. Officially supported on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later, this release marks a significant step in bringing cloud gaming to Linux desktops with performance comparable to Windows and macOS applications.
The service caters to a wide range of gamers through three subscription tiers. The free tier grants standard access, while the performance tier includes RTX ray-tracing capabilities with streaming up to 1440p at 60 frames per second (fps). For the most immersive experience, the ultimate tier offers RTX 5080 server support, allowing streaming at resolutions up to 5K at 120 fps.
This native Linux app stands out by enabling GPU support for H.264/H.265 Vulkan Video, crucial for seamless game streaming. Initially, the Flatpak will be available for download directly from <a href="http://NVIDIA.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">NVIDIA.com</a>, with support limited to x86_64 architectures.
This Linux-specific release is particularly advantageous because it offers an experience tailored for desktop systems, differing from the previously Steam Deck-optimized version. The initial rollout of the native app includes the addition of ten new games this week, such as “The Bard’s Tale IV: Director’s Cut” and “The Bard’s Tale Trilogy.” Additionally, “Delta Force” is scheduled to arrive on February 3, promising further expansion of the platform’s gaming library.
