The Khronos Group celebrates 25 years of developing open standards for visual computing. Founded in 2000 by graphics and computing pioneers, Khronos created industry-defining APIs including OpenGL ES for mobile 3D graphics, WebGL for browser-based 3D, glTF for 3D asset transmission, OpenCL and SYCL for parallel computing, SPIR-V as a portable GPU intermediate representation, Vulkan for low-level GPU control, OpenXR for cross-platform XR development, and Slang for modern shader programming with AI integration. These standards enabled the evolution from desktop workstations to mobile devices, web browsers, and spatial computing platforms by providing open, interoperable foundations that connect software to hardware across vendors.
