Zed is an exciting new code editor from the creators of Atom that is heavily focused on performance.  Written from the ground up in Rust, using GPU accelerated graphics, its fast, both to start up and to interact with.  One major problem with Zed is it was initially only available on MacOS, then in June of 2024 Linux support was added and today... Welcome to Windows!

Zed, a performance-focused code editor built in Rust, is now available on Windows after being Mac and Linux exclusive. The editor emphasizes speed through GPU acceleration and multi-core CPU usage, featuring instant startup times and responsive UI. It includes AI integration with support for multiple providers (Gemini, Copilot), built-in debugging, git integration, real-time collaboration, and an extension system. While the Windows port is functional, some features like language servers may require additional setup compared to the more mature Mac and Linux versions.

I haven’t looked into Zed specifically, but I tend to be skeptical of anything branded as “the killer” of an established product. It’s always exciting when a potential challenger appears, but calling something “the killer” often foreshadows its own quick demise.

I think what really matters is to be comfortable and productive no matter the IDE you use.

Even though Zed is amazing and does many things faster and performant compared to VSCode, it will not kill VSCode as VSCode has a world giant tech company Microsoft behind it and its support continuously.

Zed is awesome! It takes more time to load my ESLint server than it does to load Zed 👏🏻
