Platform Engineering teams are increasingly building in-house MCP (Model Context Protocol) services for developer teams, but this isn't always the right call. The key question is whether the problem actually requires an MCP or could be solved with simple automation. In-house MCPs make sense for large organizations (10–20+ teams) needing centralized policy enforcement, compliance/audit logging, or deduplication across multiple security scanners. They don't make sense for small teams, highly autonomous teams averse to centralization, or when existing public MCP servers already cover the need. The core advice: assess the problem first, check if automation suffices, and verify your team has the expertise before building.
