YouTube is expanding its AI-powered likeness detection technology to a pilot group of politicians, government officials, and journalists. Originally launched to ~4 million YouTube Partner Program creators, the tool identifies unauthorized AI-generated deepfakes and allows eligible users to request their removal. Participants must verify their identity with a selfie and government ID. Not all flagged content will be removed — YouTube will evaluate each case under existing privacy policies, preserving parody and political critique. The company also supports the NO FAKES Act at the federal level. Future plans include detecting voice likenesses and other intellectual property, as well as potentially blocking violating uploads before they go live.
