Your Strategy Isn’t Failing. Your Feedback Loop Is.

Most enterprise technology organizations suffer from a broken feedback loop between strategy and business outcomes. Two frameworks from Mik Kersten's upcoming book address this: the Outcome Loop, a closed system connecting strategic inputs through delivery outputs to measurable business outcomes and back; and the Outcome Tree, which scales this pattern across large organizations by making value streams the primary organizational unit. The Outcome Loop uses OKRs and outcome roadmaps for planning, flow metrics for delivery tracking, and outcome telemetry for feedback. Research across 8,000 value streams found only 8% of end-to-end delivery time was spent building software, with the rest lost to coordination overhead. The post also argues that AI investments without a closed Outcome Loop will only accelerate output without verifying whether it drives real outcomes.
