There's a very good chance the modal window you have in production has dealbreaking bugs. There are many reasons modal dialogs are used when they're not appropriate. Modal windows can't be bookmarked or shared as links, but it's complex.

I feel like this is more of an opinion in certain cases but is not an absolute. Moreover, I think it would be safer to say “you may not need a modal window for this particular use case, but it’s perfectly valid for another.” Making blanket statements like “you don’t need a modal window” undermines your entire argument once these particular valid use cases are uncovered.
Do I need a modal to tell the user that their form has been submitted? Quite possibly not if it’s just a simple “you did it!” I could easily get a way with a notification to the top or bottom of the page perhaps. Is a notification appropriate when I also need to display a few other bits of information to the user when that form is submitted? No, a modal would be a better option. Do I need the modal if I’m displaying multiple lines of information with associated details (think showing a summary of an order) that would not be easily rendered in a modal and is definitely too much for a notification? No, I should send the user to a separate page where I can display that information more clearly.
As we see, the use case changes and then the appropriate tool for the job changes as well. There is no absolute.
