Pre-trained transformer models like ProtGPT2 and ESM are making protein analysis accessible without requiring deep biochemistry expertise. Tia Pope, a PhD student at NC A&T, demonstrates how these tools can generate novel protein sequences and predict their functions using platforms like Hugging Face. AlphaFold and similar models have dramatically reduced the time needed for protein structure prediction, though experimental validation remains essential. Key challenges include the dark proteome — proteins with unknown functions — and evolving pathogens. The barrier to entry is low, but meaningful results still require careful interpretation and domain knowledge.
