KDE developer Xaver Hugl has proposed a new Wayland protocol called xx-fractional-scale-v2 via a merge request to wayland-protocols. The protocol aims to fix current fractional scaling limitations by allowing clients and compositors to use unscaled pixel coordinates instead of the lossy integer logical coordinate space. This addresses visible artifacts like gaps between maximized windows and panels or between sub-surfaces. The proposal revives a 2022 draft (wp-fractional-scale-v2) with a new name to avoid naming collisions. A KWin implementation by Vlad Zahorodnii accompanies the protocol proposal, with demo videos showing the current shortcomings.
