Christian Schaller from Red Hat used AI (specifically Opus 4.6 after Claude failed) to modernize the classic XMMS music player codebase, porting it from GTK2/Esound to GTK4/GStreamer/PipeWire. The experiment took hours where previous AI attempts had failed over months. Schaller also used AI to build other Linux/GNOME tools including an Elgato WiFi Lamp GNOME Shell extension, a Dell UltraSharp Webcam control app, and Window Maker dock apps for GNOME/Wayland.
