Microsoft revealed early technical details about its next-generation Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix, at GDC Festival of Gaming. The console will feature a custom AMD-based SoC co-designed to support the next generation of DirectX, with a major leap in ray tracing performance and support for neural rendering techniques including neural materials, ML-based upscaling, and super resolution. It will also support deep texture compression using neural texture compression and Zstandard, enabling direct asset streaming from SSD via DirectStorage. Developer alpha hardware kits are expected from 2027. Microsoft also reaffirmed backward compatibility across four generations of Xbox and commitment to its gaming business.
