As more and more companies have started demanding remote workers return to the office, the competitive hiring advantage for remote-first companies is back. But for quite a few people, working remotely or not has become the defining characteristic of a job. This is doubly so for workers who don't live in the few big cities, which most major tech companies settle in.

Working remotely is a competitive hiring advantage again

Super unfortunate that giant tech companies over-extended their real-estate play and are now forcing people back into the office.
That was one of the big determining factors for me leaving Amazon: I wasn’t about to move to Seattle.

It is unfortunate, as the big-tech companies are setting the tone for the industry.
I think that it’s much more complex than just real estate, since such things are never uni-dimensional. In my understanding, remote work is much less tolerant of managerial and cultural issues than in-person work in the office. This leads inadequate managers to believe that the culprit is remote work, where it usually highlights their own failures.
It’s much easier to force everyone back to the office than fixing the genuine problems in their companies.

As companies start to revert to traditional office environments, remote-first companies are once again differentiating themselves in the hiring market. This not only appeals to those valuing flexibility but also opens doors for talent residing outside major tech hubs. It’s a win-win for both employers embracing remote work and employees seeking opportunities that align with their lifestyle and location.

Should I start my career with a remote job tho? My dad’s not in tech but he is advising to move to Bangalore(India’s tech centre) and work there as it’ll be more beneficial for some reason

Working remotely is NOT a competitive hiring advantage again. While it may have been a temporary trend during the pandemic, employers are now realizing the drawbacks of remote work. Productivity suffers, teamwork and collaboration are hindered, and the lack of face-to-face interaction leads to decreased employee engagement. In-office environments foster better communication and creativity, and they provide a more cohesive company culture. Remote work might work for certain individuals, but as a whole, it’s not the competitive advantage it’s made out to be.
