The Linux Experiment

Microsoft's upcoming Windows 12 may drive more users to Linux with privacy-invasive AI features including voice commands, screen monitoring, and cloud processing. Meanwhile, Debian 13 was released with major updates, Linux Mint 22.2 beta brings fingerprint authentication and improved Wayland support, and Google is ending Steam support on Chrome OS in 2026. Other updates include Elementary OS improvements, Orion browser progress, GitHub organizational changes under Microsoft, and LVFS introducing fair-use quotas for hardware vendors.

<p>i mean, windows had vice commands over 10 years ago already. also normal people wont just change to linux on a whim, there has to happen a whole lot more for that to happen.</p>


<p>People don’t tend to change defaults. You even pointed this out when we discussed the default search engine on Firefox being Google. So instead of trying to convince everyday users, Linux needs to convince manufacturers to preinstall it. That’s the real reason Windows and macOS have any market share at all. The Steam Deck running Linux was a game-changer and a perfect example of this. Getting preinstalled on new devices is the path for Linux to take back control.</p>
