Wi-Fi 7's Multi-Link Operation (MLO) allows devices to connect to multiple frequency bands simultaneously, improving network resilience and reducing latency rather than simply boosting raw speed. MLO comes in several modes — MLSR, EMLSR, STR, NSTR, and EMLMR — with STR (Simultaneous Tx and Rx) being the most capable but currently limited to a single adapter (UniFi AirWire). Most consumer devices don't yet support STR MLO due to power and hardware requirements, and it isn't mandatory for Wi-Fi 7 certification. Where MLO is already making a difference is in mesh network wireless backhaul, enabling multi-gigabit speeds. Wi-Fi 8 is expected to push stability and resilience even further, but the author notes that consumer hardware longevity and cost remain real barriers to widespread MLO adoption.
