There are a lot of platforms that teach coding today. 
Interactive apps. Video courses. AI-assisted walkthroughs.
But long before any of that existed in its current form, there was W3Schools.
For me, W3Schools wasn’t just a reference site. 
It was the starting line.
This was back when learning to code required patience. There were no accounts to track progress. No dashboards telling you where you left off. You learned by reading, experimenting, breaking things, and figuring out where you were the last time you stopped.
You didn’t rely on memory aids. 
You relied on understanding.
And that mattered.
W3Schools taught coding from the very beginning not by assuming prior knowledge, but by walking you through how things actually work. HTML wasn’t abstract. CSS wasn’t magic. JavaScript wasn’t intimidating. Everything was broken down into simple, digestible pieces.
You could:

As the platform evolved, it didn’t abandon that philosophy. It expanded it.
Today, W3Schools is far more robust and interactive than when I first used it:

I want them to start where I started but with better tools.
W3Schools lets them experiment safely. They can write code, break it, fix it, and understand what changed. There’s no pressure to “build something impressive.” The focus stays on fundamentals.
And that’s the part too many people skip.
W3Schools doesn’t pretend to replace deeper documentation or advanced frameworks. In fact, it does something better: it points you outward. It references where languages originated, how standards evolved, and where to go next when you’re ready to dig deeper.
That teaches an important lesson early:
No single site makes you an expert. 
But a strong foundation lets you become one.
HTML leads to CSS. 
CSS leads to layout systems. 
JavaScript leads to logic. 
Logic leads to backend thinking. 
Backend thinking leads to systems.
W3Schools makes those connections visible.
In an age where AI can generate code instantly, sites like W3Schools matter more not less. They teach you how to read code, reason through problems, and understand what tools are abstracting away.
That’s why it was instrumental in my career. 
That’s why it’s still relevant. 
And that’s why I’m passing it on to my kids.
Strong builders aren’t created by shortcuts. 
They’re built on fundamentals.
And for a lot of us, those fundamentals started right there.

Why W3Schools Became the Foundation of My Coding Journey and Why I’m Passing It On

Actually this was the first site that introduced me to coding and I remember playing around HTML. Also I was a CSS float expert before and that’s when I appreciated the value of modern CSS properties like <code>display: flex</code> and <code>display: grid</code>.
I even remember compiling <a href="https://html-css-projects-w3s-jiro.netlify.app/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">my CSS learnings</a> and <a href="https://javascript-fundamentals-jiro.netlify.app/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">my JavaScript learnings</a> in a site just to drill every bit of concept I could in my mind. My idea was if I don’t have a good foundation, then my future projects would be like standing on sticks.
If I did not go through the way people used to code before and knowing why they were deprecated, I would not appreciate the modern tools we have today. Thank you W3Schools! Your site inspired me to do code reviews in Frontend Mentor as a way of giving back. Self-taught developers like me owe you big time!

W3Schools is one of the path of my job!

W3schools may have been the best 10+ years ago. Since then MDN has replaced it for me. In fact nowadays I consider it so bad that I installed an extension specifically to block it from the search results.

On the french part of the web, we had Le Site du Zéro. Website about how to make a website by someone learning how to make it.
Same idea of the instant feedback loop and it never stopped to evolve. It became an online school (Openclassroom) and kept the simplicity.
When I had to update my knowledge about the new features and updates on HTML and CSS, I even went back to the free course and did it from scratch !

But, MDN is betterer in every way at everything? you’re gonna get some very dodgy info on w3 schools. It’s one of the first things I tell new devs - don’t use w3 school, it’s pants.
