<p>New IDEs show up, get hyped across X and YouTube, promise faster workflows, smarter AI, and a better experience overall. I’ve tried a lot of them, browser-based editors, newer AI-first tools like Cursor and Trae and every time, I end up back in the same place: Visual Studio Code.</p>

<h2>I Tried the Alternatives and They Didn’t Stick</h2>
<p>I gave the browser IDEs a real shot. I downloaded the trending tools. I tested the AI-heavy editors everyone was talking about. On paper, they looked great:</p>

<p>This is the part that matters most. Some tools try to do too much for you. They abstract things away, automate heavily, and reduce friction but they also reduce learning. VS Code doesn’t hold your hand. It gives you the tools and expects you to use them. That’s how you build real skills:</p>

Why VS Code Is Still My Go-To IDE (After Trying Everything Else)

<p>I will be a bit pedantic but.</p>
<p>VSCode is an editor that needs to be bloated to turn it into an IDE, and even then, it would remain fairly limited.</p>
<p>It’s not without reason that JetBrains / VS are still popular today.</p>
<p>At the other end of the spectrum, you have Zed, which is lighter, faster, and developing at a breakneck pace. You can disable the AI or enjoy an experience similar to that of cursor.</p>
<p>Although it is still young and under development, its plugin ecosystem is constantly growing.</p>
<p>And you don’t have to put up with Microsoft’s telemetry or Electron.</p>
