Community Picks

UnoCSS is an atomic CSS engine that offers extensibility and performance. It is inspired by Windi CSS and Tailwind CSS but has its own unique features and design goals. UnoCSS allows for the creation of custom conventions and design systems.

Why UnoCSS?

I have never heard about UnoCSS. The CSS ecosystem is also huge.

A short (opinionated) TL;DR in comparison to TailwindCSS:
<ul>
<li>Not available just as PostCSS plugin -&gt; better integration</li>
<li>Regex + Function (or string and object for simple cases) based config; fairly intuitive, less verbose than Tailwind</li>
<li>More syntax alterations that allow grouping of same-prefix/-variant classes</li>
<li>No focus on restricting the values that ought to be used</li>
<li>Based on mix-it-yourself philosophy</li>
<li>Some icons (neat) and fonts (will never use) plugins.</li>
</ul>
My opinion:
<ul>
<li>The documentation is bad, as usual with mix-it-yourself stuff</li>
<li>The color change on the documentation is a hard no-go. If I were to use UnoCSS, I’d have to fix that with a user style first.</li>
<li>Syntax alterations obfuscate the code even more; making it less intuitive to plain HTML. Also, more ways to do the same thing…</li>
<li>The restriction to a fixed set of possible values is basically the most important aspect of Tailwind. UnoCSS is a huge step backward.</li>
<li>The regex + function extensibility is pretty neat, though. But again, it makes dirty hacks and inconsistencies very easy.</li>
</ul>
I remain unconvinced 🤷‍♂️, less flexibility is often times more than more flexibility.
