The open social web and federated networks matter because centralized social media platforms have become aligned with authoritarian governments while journalism declines. Decentralized platforms can provide surveillance-resistant spaces for vulnerable communities to organize safely through end-to-end encryption and federation. To succeed, builders must focus on specific communities with concrete needs rather than abstract ideological goals, asking three key questions: who specifically are we helping, why are we the right team, and how does our solution serve their real needs better than existing tools.
