Why the Model Context Protocol Won

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) rose from a rough, local-only standard in November 2024 to become the dominant protocol for AI-to-tool connectivity within a year. Despite initial limitations like fragile transports and security vulnerabilities (including tool poisoning attacks), MCP gained momentum through community innovation, strategic adoption by OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce, and rapid specification improvements. The protocol evolved from stdio-based local servers to secure remote servers with OAuth 2.1, introduced governance tools, and matured through public scrutiny. By late 2025, MCP had become production-ready infrastructure with enterprise-grade security, observability, and identity management, positioning itself as foundational communication layer for modern AI systems.
