Why Some S3 Videocards Have A Brightness Issue

Some S3 AGP videocards (Trio 3D, Trio64, ViRGE) exhibit a 'brightness bug' causing washed-out display output. The root cause is a hardware feature called the Pedestal Bit, originally designed to adjust black levels for composite TV signals, which is irrelevant for CRTs and LCDs. The issue causes problems like inconsistent brightness when paired with cards like the 3dfx Voodoo II. Using S3's own datasheets, the fix involves patching the card's BIOS to set the Pedestal Bit to 0 on boot, permanently resolving the washed-out appearance.
