Why Resumes Are Actually Helpful

A developer with recruitment experience argues that resumes (or resume-like profiles such as LinkedIn) remain essential in the hiring process. GitHub profiles alone are insufficient because most developers' best work is private, and browsing random public repos wastes everyone's time. Resumes help interviewers remember details, brief other interviewers, and guide conversations. The author also shares a preferred approach to evaluating code: asking candidates to bring real work samples from past jobs, maintained open source projects, or pet projects in production, rather than whiteboard coding or GitHub browsing.
