Web development has become extremely popular due to its low barrier to entry, accessible learning resources, and career potential. However, the reality involves intense competition, rapidly changing technologies, and deeper complexities beyond basic HTML/CSS. While webdev is a valuable starting point for learning programming fundamentals, it's important to recognize it as one of many paths in tech, including backend development, mobile apps, AI, and cloud engineering.

Why People Are Obsessed With Web Development?

A big challenge for this facet of development work is that there is a perceived low barrier to entry. Anyone (truly) can learn the basics quickly and spin up a nice web page. Front End Development has a reputation now for being the dumb-cousin of software creation. This could not be further from the truth. You need a UX and UI design sensibility (ideally formal training), a deep understanding of Accessibility, performance, how the Internet even works, API endpoint integration and API design, system design (F/E as well as a grip on the big picture), Javascript and all its ridiculous nuances, Typescript, PHP, Python + a templating framework, Software architecture principles… the list goes on and on. It feeds into why it is nearly impossible to get a F/E role right now; the standards are near-impossibly high to get a good gig because the market was flooded with base-competence bootcamp graduates who overpaid for their knowledge. (Some of these programs are truly great, but some are shams; you can learn all the core skills for a fraction of a percent of the cost by choosing some good Coursera or Udemy courses).

Classical frontend developpment is sheer torture to me, there’s always 100000 ways to do something and it seems ti be the last one you try that works every time.
Flutter is nice though.

How I first got into Web Dev.
-&gt; Heard from a relative that it makes tons of money and doesn’t require a diploma
-&gt; Did minimal research and looked for a bootcamp
-&gt; Most bootcamps were for web development
This is where the problem lies I think. The first thing they had us do in the bootcamp was they gave us certain terms and told us to look up the definitions and then try to define them in our own words.
Even though I read the definitions, I didn’t understand any of them. This field was kind of like this, it took a long time for everything to click and because of the lack of research I didn’t realize what a broad field this was and since a majority of the bootcamps were for web dev this is what I ended up getting into.

This is such a good insight. Another huge pitfall is the transition to freelancing as a “web developer”.
The first gig I got, I felt lost and confused.
It was years later that I realized it was because I was actually hired as a webdev + copywriter + content writer + ad manager + bizdev consultant + graphic designer.
Luckily I was “ok” at most those areas, but I felt like a failing imposter developer.

Before starting web dev, i was also attracted by its money maker status and i loved design in general. I am broke as a rock now someone send me 20 bucks😅🤣🤣or a web dev project you have in mind you know.
