I have been a frontend web dev since late 90s!
this is the BEST time!
Most of my career there were no components to simply pick from and use. You had to do everything yourself from scratch. Documentation was lacking and to debug something or understand why some configuration doesn’t work you would spend 2-7 days.
No to mention actual coding gets done so much faster and more efficient now.
I am endlessly pleased with AI that I cannot praise it enough

from the first time i heard someone say they were a “full-stack developer” my reaction was “you’re just a 90s ‘web master’ with a new title”.
as the OP discussed, being a full-stack developer means you end up with a shallow depth of knowledge in most areas, and a bit deeper depth in those areas you enjoy. Contrast this with being an expert in one or two areas where you can develop a deep knowledge in that topic.
The full stack developer title was created by companies who didn’t want to pay for dev team, but one person who they could convince could do it all.

“Full Stack” was once a pleasant realm when it mean that you were strong with front end skills but did not have to lean on a back end engineer for every single update or transforming the data into the shape you needed. Now it means our techno-feudal overlords pay you one salary for 2-3 jobs. Lately I have been hit up to also have UX Design as part of your Full Stack. It is absurd. And sadly, Front End is now perceived as being the inbred-cousin, the lowest hanging fruit (i.e. “Javascript kiddies”). To those who think so: get over yourself; you certainly never had do deal with IE9. Let’s bring Flash back.

I’ve been doing this since '94 and to me “full stack” meant you ran DNS, Web, Email servers and knew some basic graphic design. The stack has gotten so complex I don’t know how younger people can do this in any reasonable way, but frankly, the missing ingredient here is time. It takes time and exposure to build these skills. Don’t even mention ‘full stack’ to me unless you have over 10+ years of experience AND worked in an environment where you dealt with every piece.

but if i am a newbiee who wants to explore the world of computer science and then piking depth in a certain path, would’nt the full stack being a better chioce?
