The Linux Cast

A Linux content creator explains why he won't review Omarchy, an opinionated Arch Linux configuration script. He argues that adopting someone else's complete workflow—including their keybindings, applications, and rice—is less valuable than building your own from scratch. While acknowledging that pre-configured setups can serve as learning tools for beginners, he emphasizes that creating a personalized development environment leads to better understanding and a workflow that truly fits individual needs. Why I Won't Be Using Omarchy

Installing Arch/Hyprland and customizing it by myself made it clear to me that most people cannot afford to do it. It requires too much time.
If I had a family, I couldn’t do it.
While I consider customizing your os and ricing a genuine and authentic form of modern art, perhaps the one that better expresses the times we are living, it is a time consuming hobby, like painting, you need a lot of time to do it and it doesn’t bring home money.
Unfortunately, in this world, only wealthy people living on passive income can afford to spend time on hobbies without sacrificing more important things.
So it’s nice to have Omarchy, a ready 2 use alternative to Windows, macOS or other distros.

I mean, he had a point, if I had the resources to bespoke build my house I’ll definetly do it, but I don’t have the money nor the know how of everything.
In Omarchy it happened to me kinda the same, I don’t know how to get to that polished state; I’m sure with enough iterations I could get there but I don’t have the time to do so.
There are other solid and proven options, but the lightness and instantaneousnes of the system blew my mind

As a kid I used to install all the mods; jailbroken iPhone with custom Cydia-acquired theming, Linux with a skinned window manager and custom wallpapers, custom colors, Windows with all the Stardock programs, etc. and I spent a lot of time customizing everything to be “my” systems. These days my customization ends with what the OS provides and maybe a custom wallpaper; as my life gets busier I don’t have as much time to spend administrating a system anymore; I’d rather have a working system that doesn’t crash and doesn’t need constant tweaking to make it work correctly. That said for project boxes with a specific purpose that aren’t my primary computer I like choosing and assembling the software in the same way that others like choosing the hardware for custom builds. All depends on your use case and how much effort you want to spend on it imo.

That’s a solid take.
I built my own linux system on top of Arch. When Omarchy was released, I looked at the repo to compare their solution to mine. The few things they did better were all <s>shamelessly</s> copied over to my setup.
But I spent months over the years to get to this point.
Omarchy is only possible now that there are tools to make a really nice Linux desktop environment, but it had arrived around the time I was frustrated and almost giving up, I’d be using it for sure. It’s a great starting point.

Atomic desktops are the future, and I run my own personalized spin of Bazzite. But the main reason I’ll never run Omarchy is the guy behind it is very problematic for ethical people. I won’t link to his writings, but you can google “DHH problem” and find days of reading.
