I fail to see how this (pun incoming) time-tested approach can’t be appropriate for every single imaginable use-case, including the one described in this article.

I understand the authors point of view but the point of fact is that it’s only helpful for you, and especially only helpful for someone who travels a lot. I have the same consideration for abolishing daylight savings time, in that its more annoying to have time switch than anything else. But really it only works if you have that type of brain, and you run on a consistent schedule. You aren’t going to change society from local time even if local time doesnt always make sense.
Time zones were only created to synchronize railways, and UTC standard for airlines. Because those are required and now we have the technology to not have to synchronize time manually. People used to set local time to noon being when the sun was highest in the sky. Banks always have a clock because that used to be a thing. People would set their watch, go into town, record what time it is and set their home clock accordingly to make sure things were fixed. Now if I travel my phone just updates timezones automatically. I forget about daylight savings every year because my devices switch automatically except for my analog watches and stove.
This works fine for most people who don’t want to use mental math. but sure, do whatever works best for you.
EDITED TO ADD:
I also am acutely familiar with how much local time doesn’t really matter but is still slightly useful. I moved from Southern California to northern Washington. Same time zone, wildly different concept of time that has taken years to get used to and I’m honestly still not. Length of day changes throughout the year are vastly different and sky position changes are different too the more north (or south) of the equator you are. As long as society agrees on the concept of days happening, then saying “I’m up at 2am” is a useful context wherever you hear it for being shorthand for “i’m up later than most people are”.
