I really like the parallel with the Tesla self driving mode, cause that really delivers the point home.
A relative real world scenario that I felt recently was my reliance on Google Maps. I use it under the impression that it’s always on, and hence over time my spatial understanding of the locations around me has atrophied. This one time I was driving and my phone battery conked off, and I was trying to figure out a way home.
I felt marooned and had to really strive hard to think of the way home. And in the process it felt a bit debilitating cause this wasn’t a very novel route that I took. It was in fact part of my commute from few years ago when I used to cycle (and that’s when I don’t use Google maps).
Over time the reliance on the tool had made any of those muscles weak, and I feel the same with some front end aspects right now.
I made a simple modal in a React through Claude few days back without paying attention to the process only to find out that it didn’t handle accessibility properly. But my over reliance on trusting the tool made me reluctant to scrutinise anything.
Hence, just like the author, I’ve kept the AI code part separate from my IDE and that helps.

The problem with automatically generated code to me is, that It need to be always analyzed and checked before committing. This makes me to work in constant code review mode. Honestly… I hate doing code reviews :D
So that’s why I only use AI to write stupid and obvious stuff.

I have heavy FOMO, including in real life and coding. I need to know what my code is doing.
My approach is, with new system, new logic, I always try to write code manually first, to understand the system, the components, the relationship. If I use AI, I literally know nothing about my system.
After that, I mostly just use AI’s autocomplete on small snippets, snippets that I know and understand. Several times I asked AI to do the work for me 100%, but then I have to read it and verify it, and that will even cost me more time and money. Lesson learnt, I try to avoid asking AI to complete the work for me

The thing I’ve been using AI for – instead of writing the code for me – is to ask questions about code or languages that I am trying to learn. I know how to code, but not how to code in this specific language, or this specific concept or library. Instead of having the AI write the code, I’m having it explain what a new-to-me error means or how to do things I don’t know how to do in this specific context. Just a StackOverflow replacement.

The one thing about this that I have to agree with. Keep you AI out of your editor. The act of copy / paste of AI generated code and integrating into the on going development code allows you to truly review what was generated
