Why Every Developer Should Keep a "Coding Playground" (And How It Can Transform Your Skills)

As a “dinosaur” of development (30+ years coding, 20 years professionally), I can say that in the long term a playground is not enough. At the end of the day, it’s just a playground to keep your interests going. For me personally, a playground was not enough. It was fine for experimenting, but let’s have a little “heart to heart” here.
There’s a story attached here. As I’ve mentioned at the beginning, I’ve been doing this professionally for 20 years. Around 6-8 years ago bunrout started creeping it’s way in and playgrounds didn’t do anything to help here. I’ve been struggling with that for the next few years, wondering what’s wrong. I mean, it’s what I love doing, it’s what I do with my eyes closed and it’s something that brought me a sense of accomplishment. So, how did I end up being burnt out?
I’ve had a talk with a friend a few months back. He’s no developer, but he wanted to write himself a sort of a sorting/personal library program to manage a powerful collection of multimedia (terabytes of it, accumulated throughout the years - everything stored locally). Nothing to complicated: scan the directory, try to catalogue them automatically by assigning tags, show different means of exploring that collection, etc. He basically started writting that in Python and Qt, just by talking to ChatGPT at what he wanted to achieve (an unintentional, unaware and pure-hearted vibe coder - he doesn’t even know this has a name 😉).
He wanted me to check it out, so I got it, modified literally one line to make it work on Linux (yes, it even was portable, as he’s creating it on Windows). He did write what he wanted. And that’s the point in our conversation that he asked me the fundamental question: “When did you last write an app for yourself?”. That single question started a slew of thoughts racing through my brain.
That was it. When was the last time I did write something I used myself? The answer was simple: 20 damn years ago, before I started professional work. It was a trap I noticed years later. At the beginning it did give fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment, but as years passed and I was creating “yet another CRM web app”, that very sense slowly started fading away and let to burnout creeping in.
If you’re still with me here, the last 8 years have been mixed. I have a daughter, who’s 9 years old now and she’s kind of a central point in this. Thanks to her I finally started creating something for myself (well, for us, but I wanted it) - we’re trying to design our first game. Nothing fancy, just her imagination running all over the place without any clear goal (yet) - a platformer of sorts with things you wouldn’t believe can go into a platformer about a cat. 😁 She gets to work creatively and I have my own experiment with creating a more complex project with Godot and Bevy integration and having fun with Blender, Inkspace and Mixcraft. That might just turn out to be something we’ll use and publish when it’s ready. Something a lot bigger than just a playground.
To summarize: while the playground is important in the short-term, you need to have your own project that you create and USE yourself. Otherwise, with enough time, even the playground won’t be enough.
And remember: burnout is a serious issue. Don’t ignore it. 🤗

I just have a dir called sandbox filled with [TaskName][ext] and later on sandbox just ends up being a snippet scrap yard for tests, benchmarks and don’ts
