Why Every Developer Needs to Know Linux (And Which Distro to Use in 2025)

a couple notes about recommending distros, i wouldn’t say Arch is best for customisation since every single linux distro is as customisable as Arch, you just have some blocks to remove and rebuild to your liking (desktop environment, login screen…etc), the main selling point of Arch is AUR, that and the DIY setup.
Kali Linux is NOT a daily driver distro to recommend, it’s a set of tools best used in a VM

Robotics is a bit of a tricky one. Generally for embedded or close-to-hardware there is a lot of Linux (Raspberry Pi, Yocto and sometimes PLCs). Robotics has historically grown very slowly in adopting new stuff since the 70s. Additionally, most operating systems have too unreliable cycle times for stable motion control. At least in western industrial robotics this is the case (don’t know about the asian markets). Robotics mostly rely on hard realtime capable systems (the RT patches make the kernel only soft realtime).

But where is Linux Mint? Kinda missing the good ol’ beginners kit.

Top distro to learn everything: Gentoo. Install it once and you’ll understand every distro. They provide an awesome handbook that guides through the entire installation. For hardcore and deep knowledge seekers only though.

I’ve been using Ubuntu Linux since 2023 for Android development, but I’m still struggling with some basics. I know Linux is supposed to be better for development, but I don’t fully understand why yet. Also, I’m having trouble with file and folder management - it’s quite different from Windows.
