There is a new trend in the video-games industry. It seems that game consoles are becoming more like PCs.
PlayStation and Xbox hardware now use the same x86 CPUs and AMD GPUs as desktop PCs.
Console exclusive games like The Last of Us, Spiderman, Uncharted, etc keep coming out on PCs and Microsoft barely pretends Xbox isn’t just another PC.
At the same time, Valve keeps pushing Steam Deck–style hardware that blurs the line even further between “console” and “PC.”
What’s interesting is that this isn’t accidental. Consoles are slowly converging toward the same shape. Different companies, different strategies, but the same end result.
Once you notice it, you start asking questions. If consoles are basically gaming PCs now, what actually makes them worth buying? Is it hardware, exclusives, subscriptions, storefronts, or just convenience?
And what happens when a PC-native company like Valve starts playing in the living room seriously again?
