That’s what I told myself before hitting send on a message to one of our biggest active clients. Not ex-client. Not difficult prospect. One of our current, ongoing partners.
But it had to be done.
<h3>The Backstory</h3>
We were deep into a App redesign project. Agreed on a clear scope. Got designs approved. Delivered what was asked.
Then came the slow creep:

<li>Oh and one more section here.</li>
<li>Actually, we need new flows and reworked functionality.</li>
<li>Now that we’re at it, maybe a new persona to cater to?</li>
</ul>
Nothing malicious. But it added up - fast.
<h3>What I Sent</h3>
The message was long, professional, and confident. It wasn’t angry. It wasn’t emotional. It was just clear.

<li>I paused all work until we received a bug report tied to our current delivery.</li>
<li>I listed every request we had already fulfilled.</li>
<li>I shared a fresh list of 10+ new requests (with timestamps and references).</li>
<li>I explained how the client was moving the goalposts.</li>
<li>I offered a solution: define a new scope, get alignment, and treat it as Phase 2.</li>
<li>I ended with an invitation: let’s recalibrate and move forward with clarity.</li>

<h3>Why This Matters for You</h3>
If you’re a freelancer, contractor, or run a client-facing team, you need to learn this move. It doesn’t come easy. You can’t just snap one day and write aggressive emails.
You need:

<li>Calm tone under pressure.</li>

Every system has loopholes. But that doesn’t mean you stay unprotected.

If you’re always scared of upsetting the client, you’ll never be respected by them.
