Postgres just passed the 25 year milestone as an open source project. Postgres' origin started with the Ingres project at the University of California Berkeley as Ingres (INteractive Graphics REtrieval System) The first version of Postgres was released as 6.0 in 1996 and the Postgres Global Development Team was established.

When Did Postgres Become Cool?

postgres extensions like postgis also allow to keep complex data types like geometry and postgres domains (although the name is misleading) allow you to make custom datatypes with validation rules and constraints.

I wasn’t aware of <code>hstore</code> datatype in PG, but it is probably because of the massive adoption of <code>JSONB</code> datatype which resolves the same issue with storing unstructured data.
