The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) has analyzed the FCC's ban on the sale of new home routers not manufactured in the United States. According to SFC's Denver Gingerich, the ban does not appear to restrict router owners from installing their own firmware updates, such as OpenWrt, on devices they already own. The FCC's restrictions target manufacturers, not end users making software changes to their own hardware. The OpenWrt One router, already FCC-approved, should remain available in the US. SFC has requested clarification from the FCC and will share updates when received.
