With 15 years of experience, I can say that the most difficult point is precisely this: “short-term pain for long-term gain”, or the ability to say NO.
A good developer knows how important and satisfying it is to do something, because that thing will be his/her happiness and the happiness of someone else. However, this is an emotional trap! When there is not enough time or there are not enough resources we must have the courage to say “NO, it can’t be made well and in time!”.

I’d argue that provided you decouple the code correctly, you can mitigate the impact “short term pain, long term gain” design pressure.
