I recently redesigned the <a href="https://www.texavor.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Texavor</a>. After the initial launch, one of the brutal pieces of feedback for the landing page was that it was too generic. It feels like it lacks a design system. I didn’t realize until someone else pointed it out. I built an initial design system, but eventually, AI hallucinated, and it created its own things.
At first, AI feels like a superpower. It generates codes fast and even with precision. It fixes syntax errors on its own. Your code implements features that takes month in a day. But after a while, you start noticing patterns:

The design it generates looks good, but lacks the taste and structure that you established earlier.
I feel like generating a non-generic and unique UI is kind of the hardest thing when building UI as a front-end Developer.

What’s the Hardest Part of Generating UI as a Frontend Developer?

it all depends on the design. some designs are “crazy” complex with a lot of different scenarios and some are plain simple.
In what sense do you mean “design system getting broken”?
“At what point do you stop trusting AI and take full control” - when I see it utterly fails after 1-2 tries its obviously the AI is not up for the task (and I’m talking about the best one currently, Opus 4.6 thinking mode)

Writing the code is never the issue — I’m fine stepping in whenever the AI messes up or acts dumb. My real frustration is getting it to respect the layouts and templates I give it. It constantly thinks it knows better and veers off track.
Even worse is when it tries to be creative. It just recycles the same clichéd ideas over and over. Use AI for design inspiration and your site will likely end up looking like every other low-budget template from those HTML theme marketplaces.
AI is not good at design.

At work, I use AI to write code, but I let it use pre-written component(mostly page layouts) as reference to keep consistent markup.
and in my personal project where I have to design UI myself, I just use figma to design, define design tokens myself and just make ai use pre-built components.
I don’t think AI designs UI well. They all look boring and same, just like some wireframes. (Or try to look fancy with 0 aesthetics, with all those purple gradients and emojis, glassmorphism and same rounded corners, floating on hover)
Recently I’m looking into adopting Kombai to integrate pre-made design systems with AI.

Remember that the AI sometimes ignores the knowledge you have about your project. Just because you have a bunch of .md files in your project doesn’t mean they will be taken into account. They always hallucinate and assume other ideas rather than yours, even if they are defined in <a href="http://agents.md" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">agents.md</a>, etc. Always check what they are doing and, if possible, keep things as simple as possible for better results.

Honestly, I haven’t let AI touch how I style my projects. I only asked AI to solve micro-CSS problems and tweaks in areas where I can’t solve on my own. I’m afraid of future headaches where I have to solve some styling problems and is forced to read lines of code I did not write in the first place.
Writing CSS is satisfying for me even though it takes longer than a single prompt. At least if there’s a styling error in one of my UI’s, then the error context is already in the back of my head. That way, it let’s me focus more on the solution rather than “finding” the problem.
