What's Open Web Docs?

Open Web Docs (OWD) is a vendor-neutral non-profit organization founded in January 2021 that serves as one of the largest contributors to MDN Web Docs. With a small team of technical writers, OWD writes new documentation, maintains existing content, and manages the browser compatibility data (BCD) tables used by tools like caniuse.com, VSCode, ESLint, and Chrome/Firefox DevTools. OWD was created after Mozilla's 2020 layoffs significantly reduced the MDN team. The organization is funded by corporate sponsors (primarily Google and Microsoft) and individual backers. Developers and companies who rely on MDN are encouraged to financially support OWD to ensure the long-term health of web platform documentation.
