Gutenberg 23.1 ships two new experiments: a Custom Taxonomies management screen for creating and editing taxonomies without PHP, and a Media Editor with freeform image cropping for Image and Site Logo blocks. The @wordpress/ui package gains Drawer and Autocomplete compound primitives, plus overlay polish including sticky headers/footers and improved portaling. Thumbnail sideload requests now run in parallel, speeding up bulk image uploads. A new @wordpress/grid package (developer preview) introduces a DashboardGrid component with drag-to-reorder and resize handles. The Classic block is hidden from the inserter via a new experiment, and several real-time collaboration reliability fixes address divergence, large update rejections, and redundant block re-parsing on load.
