A monthly roundup of Gutenberg and WordPress 7.0 developer updates for May 2026. Key highlights include early work on a new Content Types system, a revisions panel extended to templates and patterns, and a new @wordpress/grid package. Real-time collaboration (RTC) has been pulled from the WordPress 7.0 release due to race conditions, server load, and memory concerns. Other notable changes include Guidelines CPT renaming and refinement, REST API updates adding date fields to Templates endpoints, a new widget-types data layer, per-block CSS capability gating, HEIC-to-JPEG extension fix, and numerous block improvements for Tabs, Search, Accordion, Image, Cover, and Grid blocks. WordPress 7.0 RC3 is available and developers are urged to test plugins and themes against it before the May 20 final release.
