As managers, we need to take the time to deep dive and understand each of our team members’ motivation.
It is not an easy task but it is for sure an important one.
Different people have different motivations and even if we do understand one’s motivation it is bound to change over time.
One thing that has helped me is realizing that most of us share 3 main areas of motivation, and here they are:
<ol>
<li>Autonomy</li>
<li>Purpose</li>
<li>Mastery</li>
</ol>
So, when I look at engineering teams I encourage managers to ask themselves the following questions:
<ol>
<li>How much autonomy does each team member feel they have? If it’s less than a 7, think about ways to improve it.</li>
<li>Is your team aware of the big picture? do you invest time in communicating how their efforts translate to the business/ revenue? If your answer is no, you need to start doing it - now.</li>
<li>How do you support professional growth? do you encourage live demos? knowledge sharing sessions? if you still haven’t started - choose the right method and take action.</li>
</ol>

Understanding team members' motivation is crucial for managers. There are 3 main areas of motivation: autonomy, purpose, and mastery. Managers can improve team autonomy, communicate the big picture, and support professional growth.

What is your biggest motivation?

my motivation is seeing my project (that I’m currently working on) be alive, and do stuff, especially watching the workers do stuff after stuff in my homemade task manager
