As per the regulations, ICANN should discontinue the .io domain should the British Indian Ocean Territory cease to exist. Or will it change its policy so that thousands of websites (including ours) won't lose their domain names?

Companies using .io domains should consider having backup plans in place, although it's unlikely that ICANN will terminate the .io domain due to its significant usage.

There are quite a few generic TLDs out there. One alternative is <code>.codes</code>

Oof i’ll have to move like 3 unfinished startup ideas like <a href="https://storygenie.io" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">storygenie.io</a>, i just think the .io domain flows so well in a name 😭 in/out makes alot of sense for many business cases!

ICANN should perhaps just switch the domain category then, changing it to that of the <code>.dev</code> and <code>.tech</code> domains. It practically already serves that purpose in the majority of cases. No need to make an exemption or anything.
