Essential uses include media servers, development/test environments, DVR systems, remote access servers, and personal backups. I’ll reply to this and leave my comments for the person who posted the “7 Reasons You Shouldn’t” article.
The simplest counterpoint is that learning how something works from an infrastructure standpoint is valuable experience, even if, in the end, you don’t do much with it.
Now, addressing each of the 7 reasons not to do a home lab:

Rising Cost – This still applies even if you use the cloud. No matter what you’re doing, even the smallest cloud tier will only last so long before you outgrow it and start spending more and more on compute power. At least with a home lab, the upfront cost is high, but you own the hardware. You can also reduce costs in various ways depending on what you’re running.

Noise &amp; Space – Mini PCs, Macs, and silent switches have come a long way, and even Synology NAS devices aren’t that loud. Sure, home labs take up space, but most people have stuff sitting around for years that they don’t use. If noise is a concern, there are plenty of quiet options available.

Maintenance – I’ve never understood why this is such a big concern. You’re not running a multi-million-dollar enterprise. Even my basic setup with a Synology NAS and a Hyper-V server doesn’t take much time or doesn’t cost me a lot in electricity. In fact, it’s a great learning experience.

Time Commitment – Time is subjective. I agree that it can be a factor, but setting up a mini PC with something like Yunohost is quick and easy. At its simplest, a home lab doesn’t demand much more time than any other hobby.

Business Use Cases – I get this point, but most people running home labs aren’t doing it to start a business. That said, if you do turn your home lab into part of your business, DHH’s article makes a strong case for why owning and controlling your own hardware is often better than trusting someone else’s infrastructure.

Security Risks – Any misconfiguration can lead to security risks. The argument that cloud providers are inherently more secure ignores the fact that people make the same security mistakes there too. Just ask yourself how many times you’ve received a letter saying, “Oops, your data was stolen—here’s a free year of identity protection.”

Learning &amp; Control – The whole point of a home lab is to learn and take control of your own data. If you’re a developer building an app, sure, deploying to the cloud makes sense. But if you’re trying to learn new tools, explore open-source software, or just have more control over your setup, a home lab is a great option.

DHH wrote a great article on bringing things out of the cloud and managing them yourself. In the end, you do what’s best for you. The article brings up valid points to consider, but hosting things yourself isn’t inherently bad. Try it out—you might learn something valuable.
