Linux Mint has released HWE (Hardware Enablement) ISO images for Linux Mint 22.3, shipping with Linux kernel 6.17 instead of the standard 6.14. These are not new releases but alternative installation images designed for users with very new hardware that may not be supported by the older kernel. Existing Mint 22.3 users who are already up to date likely already have kernel 6.17 and don't need these ISOs. The HWE ISOs are primarily useful at install time for machines where the regular ISO fails to boot or install. Users with NVIDIA, Broadcom, or VirtualBox setups should be cautious, as proprietary modules can have compatibility issues on newer kernels. The Mint team plans to continue releasing updated HWE ISOs as newer kernels land, bridging the gap until Linux Mint 23 arrives in December 2026.
