Anthropic is changing how Claude subscriptions work starting June 15, splitting billing into two pools: one for first-party tools and one for third-party agent/SDK usage. Claude Code used through ACP (including in Zed) will no longer draw from standard Pro/Max subscription limits, instead consuming a new monthly Agent SDK credit ($20 for Pro, $100 for Max 5x, $200 for Max 20x) billed at full API rates. This represents a significant cost increase for heavy agent users, who previously benefited from roughly 15-30x subsidized pricing. Zed users have several alternatives: run the official Claude CLI in Zed's terminal to keep using subscription limits, switch to other providers (Copilot, DeepSeek, Ollama, or custom API keys), or use other ACP-compatible agents like OpenCode or Codex. Zed emphasizes that ACP is an open protocol designed to prevent editor lock-in to any single provider's pricing.
