Back in October 2022, I wrote about becoming OpenTelemetry’s first community manager. At the time, the project had just over 5000 contributors. Since then, those numbers have grown considerably – almost 20,000 people have contributed to the project! As our community grows, the role and scope of community management must grow with it.
Community management matters a lot in open source, and while I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together over the past few years, I’ve reached a point where I can no longer dedicate the time and focus this work demands. The role deserves someone who can give it their full attention.

OpenTelemetry's platform is an observability framework, offering insights into distributed tracing, metrics collection, and log management for cloud-native applications. Through documentation, tutorials, and community contributions, OpenTelemetry provides insights into instrumenting applications to monitor performance and troubleshoot issues. Developers and DevOps teams can learn about distributed tracing standards, telemetry data formats, and integration with observability tools to gain visibility into complex distributed systems.

OpenTelemetry announces new community managers as the project scales from 5,000 to nearly 20,000 contributors. Adriana Villela and Reese Lee are taking over as community managers, with Julia Furst Morgado joining as associate community manager. The new team will work across OpenTelemetry and broader CNCF community SIGs to evolve the community management role.
