In just 5 lines you can create the autoreconnect mechanism. Fallback using polling is really simple on backend and frontend. For small projects use <a href="http://socket.io" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">socket.io</a>, otherwise prefer pure websocket, trust me.

I don’t think this 2 should be compared as socket io is using WebSocket internally for connection. so its library on top of WebSocket , but with better and easy control like fallback to polling.
