Mozilla software engineer Ryan Hunt argues that the WebAssembly Component Model, in development since 2021, is key to making Wasm a first-class language on the web. Currently, WebAssembly lacks tight web platform integration compared to JavaScript, limiting its adoption to large companies with significant resources. The Component Model would provide standardized executable artifacts, multi-language toolchain support, loading/linking handling, and Web API support. Mozilla is collaborating with the WebAssembly Community Group on the design, and Google is evaluating the proposal.
