The trend of communication and information becoming more centralized in large corporations is worrying and worth fighting against. "Web3," as it exists today and appears to be building towards, is actually more centralized than the web it seeks to replace. The reason people build on these fundamentally centralized technologies is actually pretty obvious: the vast majority of DAOs are transparently cash grabs.

I feel like this article mostly misses the point and compares apples to oranges.
Ethereum and blockchains in general are not a replacement for the Internet.
In terms of media hosting, I agree places like OpenSea are stupid for using traditional CDNs. Things like IPFS exist to solve these problems.
  
To answer the last point about being able to spin up your own private ledger I would answer that with EOSIO. I spin up my own local blockchain for development purposes all the time, if I wanted to I could make that node public and allow anyone to interact with it or become a block producer.
EOS, WAX, Proton, Telos, FIO, Europechain, COFFE all run on EOSIO technology.
All that being said, I think the whole hipster trend of web3 is bogus, it’s just a marketing term that has lost any meaning it may have originally held.
I love blockchain and I feel that it can improve a lot of existing systems, but throwing blockchain and NFT and “web3” at everything is silly, and most of the current landscape are just cash grabs and straight-up scams.

I don’t quite agree, except for the NFT. The “centralized” aspect comes mainly from RPC servers. If you want to interact with the blockchain, you have to go through an RPC server that could refuse your requests. And creating your own RPC server is very expensive.
