APCA contrast was removed from WCAG3 working drafts in 2023 and the current WCAG3 spec explicitly states the contrast algorithm is yet to be determined. Despite this, many tools and teams continue to promote APCA as the definitive WCAG3 contrast method, which creates legal risk for those who abandon WCAG2 contrast requirements based on that advice. WCAG3 is unlikely to be finalized before 2030. Until then, developers should either ensure colors also pass WCAG2 contrast requirements, or carefully document any deviations with legal counsel.
