Waymo has suspended robotaxi freeway service in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Miami due to difficulties navigating highway construction zones. The company says it is integrating technical learnings into its software and expects to resume freeway routes soon. This follows separate service pauses in Atlanta and San Antonio after robotaxis repeatedly drove into flooded streets, prompting a software recall. The disruptions come as Waymo is aggressively expanding to new cities with a goal of one million paid rides per week by end of 2026, and is testing its new Zeekr-built Ojai vehicle. Freeway access has been critical to Waymo's expansion strategy, significantly reducing trip times and improving airport connectivity.
